Hondo

Hondo has arrived at Santuario de Karuna ~ we promised to make the rest of his life the best of his life.  He is a 24 year old kind and gentle spirit mammoth donkey.

This old man was being neglected & abused at his previous place…so glad he gets to spend his remaining years being loved and cared for ❤

Prior to Hondo arriving in sanctuary our sweet boy was kicked in the mouth by a cowboy on saddle.  As you can see, he lost several teeth.

He was guardian to a herd of cattle on a ranch in Quemedo, NM.  Hondo’s “job” was to protect calves born on range from predators.

As Hondo began to age, he began to slow down.  This resulted in the loss of several calves  for this he was punished.

Without his teeth he was unable to forage for food and he declined in health.

We are so happy that Hondo will never again experience abuse at the hands of humans ~ he is home ~ he is loved ♥️

He is flourishing ~ he brings us so much joy every single day!  He wakes us like the roosters with his soft and gentle bray.

He loves to cruise the sanctuary and greet all of his animal friends ~ his favorite thing to do is stop, drop and roll and follow closely behind us as we do our chores. 

Hondo is loved ~ He is home ❤️

A personal space was built for him for when he is not cruising the sanctuary.

Don’t tell the others, but Hondo quickly became a sanctuary favorite! 

Fun fact:  Hondo loves tongue rubs!

On August 24th, 2022, Isabelle came to the sanctuary to be a companion to Hondo. Now Honda cruises the sanctuary with his new BFF. Yes Hondo and Isabelle are in love ♥️
